That sucks. Early 70s Marvel is my comic book era, really. Forget Howard, Omega, Man-Thing...he really did a great job with Son of Satan and the Defenders.

The tributes are kind of heartbreaking. He was obviously a mensch and well loved in the industry, aside from his talent as a writer.

I haven't really read much Howard, actually, and this may be the time to rectify that. But yeah, mostly my love for him is related to my love for the old-school Defenders series.

It's a shame. It seemed like he was on the verge of a comeback, with his work on Dr. Fate.

Yeah, before the Defenders, Dr. Strange, Namor, and the Hulk were among my least favorite Marvel characters. Man-Thing wasn't really my cup of tea, either, but Gerber made me enjoy them in the books he wrote.

You should read more Howard.

I also always wanted to ask him about the "elf-with-a-gun" foreshadowings that kept popping up in Defenders, and then was abruptly cut off when he left the title. I always wondered if he'd had some big plans for that, or if the bizarre ending of that sub-plot was sanctioned by him.
