I Have Seen the Future and It Creeps Me the F&%$ Out

I don't know if I'm squeamish or what, but there are two recent commercials in heavy rotation that I can't watch; I mean that I literally have to look away until they are over, or change the channel. The first is that AT&T commercial where the texting thumbs have FACES on them. Right, because the world would be better if our fingers were able to carry on conversations that our mouths are too busy to have. AGH! It makes my thumbnails itch, it is so damn wrong.

The other commercials are the XBox 360 commercials where they pan around the people's heads to show that the back of them have been blown open to become a stage, etc. Man, I'm sure glad that special effects have progressed this far, but if the future means that I'll be watching movies on the inside of the guy's skull in front of me on the bus, I'm heading back to the fourteenth century. In the fetal position.

Oh, yeah, that XBox creeps me the hell out, too. I didn't even remember what it was selling, just that it was time to flip the channel.

I hate these two commercials, too. Good to know I'm not alone.

There was a Nissan where it looked like human skin was going through a sewing machine. I sent the company an e-mail telling them why I didn't like it. Figured it couldn't hurt.

I don't like the texting thumbs either but the ads that gross me out even more are the ones on TV in New York State about lung cancer and quitting smoking. There's one where a guy squeezes what looks like a pound of pus out of a dead guy's artery. I saw that ad and actually ran to the bathroom and lost my dinner.

I mean, I DON'T SMOKE! Don't do that to me! Gah!!!

The XBox commercials keep reminding me of A.I. (and what a crappy movie that was).

The Xbox commercial weirds me out, too. The thumbs are annoying, but don't make me shudder the way the hollowed out heads do.

I know the exact ones you're talking about. The texting one doesn't really bother me, but I agree that the XBOX one is super creepy, but also kind of beautiful like an old clock or something.

I have been in the land of having a tv for the past few months after not having broadcast tv or cable for 9 years. Commercials in general freak me out, but those two are particularly disturbing. I hate that xbox commercial, but I still want one.

I don't even want to talk about the thumbs.

I'm slightly uncomfortable at the Xbox commercials, but the the thumbs? So very awful. It's not only a horrible visual, but their voices bother me as well. (Probably because thumbs shouldn't talk!)

Yes, indeed. Lisa and I actually both hold up a hand to block our view of the screen. There's a "Kill Volume" button, but no "Kill Picture" button. Why is that? Electronics engineers, get on that RIGHT NOW!

oh, you make me laugh so much. thank you.

That thumb one really upsets me too.

I don't understand how it is that the other people in these commercials don't run screaming from the room when their friends' heads open up.

On the Internet, you're never the only one.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? I didn't see that. Sounds horrifying, though.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe they can even put that on TV. When are you watching, like 3 AM?

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so happy I missed that movie.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
So glad I'm not the only one with these squick triggers.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I see what you're saying, but I can't bring myself to look at it for long enough to appreciate the steampunky-ness of it.

Welcome back home, BTW!

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, just responding to these comments has me suspecting my thumbs of crimes against the corpus.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
They're also spouting some incredibly inane text-speak. Which really just completes the carnival of revulsion.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
You mean "Blind" instead of "Mute"? GENIUS.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be here all week month year MY LIFE.
