So my fave actress ever, Kate Winslet, finally can call herself an Academy Award-winning Actress. And today I can call myself a Nebula Award-nominated Author. Holy shit!

When I first heard the news I was stunned, because I did not (probably still do not) understand how the nomination process works. I wasn't on the long list, so how did I end up on the final ballot? As [livejournal.com profile] shsilver explained when he called to notify me, it's because of the book jury, which had the option of choosing one book to add to the list. One. Book. Kinda feels like I won something already, when I think about that. I don't have to look far to be humbled, though; look at the names I'm nominated with:

Novels

Little Brother - Doctorow, Cory (Tor, Apr08)
Powers - Le Guin, Ursula K. (Harcourt, Sep07)
Cauldron - McDevitt, Jack (Ace, Nov07)
Brasyl - McDonald, Ian (Pyr, May07)
Making Money - Pratchett, Terry (Harper, Sep07)
Superpowers - Schwartz, David J. (Three Rivers Press, Jun08)

Yeah, me and Ursula Le Guin. There's a league that exists that both of us are in, apparently. Who knew?

Read the entire list of nominees here. Congratulations to Ysa and Charley and Rick and Jeff and everyone!

I don't know if I'll make it to L.A., mostly on account of a lack of funds. But I hope. This might never happen again, y'know?

That's just spectacular, dude. Congratulations!

Thanks, Greg! Any tips for a first-time nominee?

Tips? Absolutely. Do not eat the fish.

No, seriously! Do not eat the fish.

No, really, seriously ... Have fun with it! People you don't even know singled your book out for its awesomeness, and how awesome is that?

It's pretty awesome!

I'm remembering that banquet, now. Matt Withers was INDIGNANT that the chocolate "mousse" was in fact some kind of chocolate cake. His ranting was hilarious.

And you had to sit at the Serius Table with the nominees and shit. Poor you!

:-)

No, no, I was at the Strange Horizons table! It was fine!

I recall discussion about the truffled chocolate cake and confusion over what it means to "truffle" something.

Huh, for some reason i thought you were at the Asimov's table. Perhaps I was drunk or something.

Maybe you ate the fish.

It was Rosenbaum and Rowe (and Gwenda) that flaked on us, with the ridiculous excuse that they were sitting with the editors who'd bought their stories.

Yes, I was going to warn you about the "truffled mousse cake", but you remembered.
