It just occurred to me that that might not be a Teddy Roosevelt-style exclamation of approval, but rather a label being applied to me.

In which I case I must now run away crying.

Through the magic of the English language, it can be both!

You're a woman of mystery, Bear.

Nah, she's being polite. We all know what she really meant.

So, how fast did you type "Oh, shut up."? And how does that speed extrapolate to your usual word count?

The first two words took .7 seconds each, but the odd thing about my process is that every third word takes twenty minutes. I usually try to skip right to the fourth.

That is SO weird. For me it's every ninth word. Maybe you're doing something wrong? Have you seen Matthew Cheney's writing advice? That sorted out all my writing problems quick smart. Also maybe if you didn't write about elephants so much?

It's not the elephants' fault!

I am, of course, following Matt's advice and writing Plot #2, where the king kills himself on account of the weather. And I'm trying to distill it to a third of its natural length, hence the greater order of magnitude of difficulty. NEVER AGAIN.

Touchy! I'm not blaming the elephants, just wondering if your handling of them is affecting your every fourth word. Some people just shouldn't write about elephants.

But your response make me fairly certain that it's the distillation that's causing you to come a cropper. No one who hasn't already written at least fifteen novels and lived in Uzbekistan for two years on a strict vegan diet can distill properly. It's well known.

Excellent choice on the plot though. Might even see you through.

Buena suerte!
