Sabu Moves To the Twin Cities Alone*

So, my news is simply this: I'm moving back to St. Paul. Like, in a week. For some reason I tend to play these things very close to the vest, but now the truck is reserved, the boxes are . . . here, and the lease is signed and all that.

Chicago has been pretty good to me, overall. But I have to say that it's never quite felt like home. And there's the money aspect. As Gavin once said about living in a big hip city without having lots of money, "You're missing something cool every night." Yeah. An illustrative point on the economics of St. Paul vs. Chicago; the place I'll be moving into is $40 cheaper per month, and has one bedroom more (for a total of one). And it's in a great neighborhood with lots of stuff in walking distance, and public transit, and a three-mile bike ride to my folks' place. Which brings us to the second big reason for the move, which is family; most of them are in the Twin Cities or at least nearby, and I'm at a point where I'd like to be able to see them more.

Things I will miss about Chicago? Friends. My writing group, the Semi-Omniscients; great people all around, who've really pushed me to write better. The Art Institute. The trains, although that's more for the way they were a year or so ago than the way they are now. The Lakeshore Path. The Hideout; actually, the music scene in general. If I weren't so stuffed-in-the-head I could perhaps think of more things.

I'll be crashing with my folks for a month until my lease kicks in; I'll post the addresses as they change. My phone will hopefully stay the same. Now I am off to kill this cold.

*Apologies for the bad John Prine reference.

I'm sort of sad to go, as well, but I think overall the pros far outweigh the cons.

What about you? Do you have a move impending?

[identity profile] tacithydra.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I do! I need to get my ass in gear prepping for it, honestly. =P I love everyone here, and it makes me sad to think I'll be leaving. I think I'm kind of going "la la la la la" about the move, because then I can pretend that I'll be able to drop by and see everone whenever. I'm really going to miss this place.

It sounds like it'll be great for you, though. I'm excited for you!

Are you going to be at WisCon, still?

[identity profile] tacithydra.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, for all that I was whiny in the last post, I'm hyped about it! It's gonna be really fun. I'm still in recovery from the crapfest that was the last year, so as much as I'll miss Chicago, a change will also be good. While I'd rather write good memories over the places with bad ones, sometimes going to a place with a clean slate is a good idea.

I'm definitely hitting WisCon, though. Are you?

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I hear ya. I moved down here for a change, initially (also for school), and overall it was a great move. But all things must end, and now seems like the right time for another change.

And YES to WisCon. We will hang.

[identity profile] tacithydra.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Truer words, Mister Schwartz, truer words.

Yay WisCon hanging! I expect your schedule will be more packed than mine - did you wanna pick a particular time/day, or just wait until we run into each other there?

And does all this box-packing and jitteration mean I won't be seeing you this Thursday?

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, my WisCon schedule isn't that crazy; just a reading on Saturday afternoon. I'm sure we'll have lots of time for hanging.

Yeah, I'm not actually sure about Thursday. I would like to be there, to say goodbye to folks, but I'll have to get a lot more together than I am at this moment. Tentatively yes, I guess. Are you heading over there? Driving, or is Mr. James?

[identity profile] tacithydra.livejournal.com 2007-04-23 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd love to be able to say goodbye in person, but I understand all the chaos and all the stuff that needs to happen. I believe Mr. James is the one in charge of mechanical peregrination this time. I will save a snurri-shaped spot, but I will not cast it in iron. It will be squishy and flexible like... something not iron.

And yay lots of hanging time!

DAMMIT.

YOU ARE BOTH LEAVING AND I HAVEN'T MET EITHER OF YOU IN PERSON???

But GOOD LUCK TO BOTH OF YOU!

and Jen, where are YOU going?

At least I know I can pester him when I get up to MPLS....

NNNNOOOOO!!!!!!

Everyone is leaving!

[identity profile] tacithydra.livejournal.com 2007-04-24 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
=(

Honestly, if someone invents a teleporter I will be the first on the list to buy it. I will sell my car to buy it. I want to be everywhere.

[identity profile] haddayr.livejournal.com 2007-04-25 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
My little sister is an engineer. So far, instead of inventing my teleporter, she has been selfishly building stuff for the Mars Rover.

I DO NOT WANT TO GO TO MARS. I WANT A TELEPORTER.

You have reminded me that I need to nag her, again.

(I have sisters in Colorado, California, and Arizona to visit and NO TIME or money for it, thus my urgent need for a teleporter. Also friends and other family all over the damn place.)

[identity profile] tacithydra.livejournal.com 2007-04-25 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, dude, tell her to get on that! Lame engineers. Who does anybody know on Mars?

It is even harder to get together for coffee if you have to rendezvous on the frikkin' red planet. That plan is foolish.

(Yeah, I have way too many people who are close to my heart scattered all over, as well.) =(
