6. Lavondyss by Robert Holdstock (Re-read). The last time I read Lavondyss was not long after the first time I read Mythago Wood. I don't recall liking it that much, and that may be because I was not ready for it. It's a much darker and more unsettling book than its predecessor, and I mean that in the best possible way. This is the story of Tallis Keeton, who grows up in the shadow of Ryhope Wood, and whose brother Harry is lost inside it; her connection to Harry, and to the story of the wood, draws her into a narrative that she is not as in control of as she believes. Mythago Wood was about story as a living thing, shaped by the human unconscious, constantly changing. In Lavondyss, story is a trap, inescapable, unforgiving, and brutal. If Mythago Wood is the bonsai, Lavondyss is the briar. Gorgeous and heartbreaking.
