He's the Last of the Hard-Core Troubadours

I am so cranky today. No, there is no reason for it. Or rather, there are many trivial reasons for it and no good ones. It is your responsibility to cheer me up in the comments. I DARE YOU.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes. I'd seen that, but it made me smile again. Nicely done! :-)

Marsupials are usually a safe bet for making people smile.

I can't wait to read your book! If I had to choose between getting an advance copy of your book or Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I would choose your book without hesitation. :)

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, thanks! The only appropriate response to that would seem to be to look at my shoes and say "Aw shucks," so picture me doing so.

[identity profile] gregvaneekhout.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I just named my kid after you.

Well, okay, I don't have a kid, so I named someone else's kid after you.

It wasn't a kid I know. It was some stranger's kid.

I didn't actually tell the stranger or the kid that I'd named the kid after you.

Now there's some kid whose name is Dave and doesn't even know it.

Unless the kid is already named Dave. In that case, presumably, the kid would know his name is Dave, but he wouldn't know why.

Aw, you're welcome!

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Really, just knowing that the son of my heart is out there helps. Ha!

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the construction dudes blokes prancing around and going "It's a lady's car! It's a lady's car!"

There's just something abut crushing vehicles with heavy equipment that makes my heart sing.

Awwwww Corgi!

[identity profile] tanaise.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not understanding why I should help you be less cranky. I say, relish the crankiness. GLORY IN ITS AWESOMENESS.

Also, make sure you read Barth's post about Isaiah from yesterday. No one can be cranky after that.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
But being cranky sucks! I don't want it.

[identity profile] tanaise.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly you didn't read the Isaiah story, or it would have fixed that.

Alternately, kick things. preferably things which will make noise but not injure you.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I read it, again. There's a law of diminishing returns.

I'm not going to kick anything while I'm not wearing shoes.

[identity profile] tanaise.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I'm starting to think you don't want to be happy. maybe you need some hurt/comfort manpain/manlove fic to fix you.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
No really, I'll be fine.

Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

[identity profile] tanaise.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know...That doesn't sound sincere. i think maybe you're just saying that so you appear strong and manly, but sekritly, you want me to understand that you *do* need the fic.

Re: Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
See? This is how romance novels are destroying our culture!

Re: Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

[identity profile] tanaise.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You only say that because you didn't read Meg's book! Romance is nothing, it's machine porn that you need to fear.

Re: Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Megwha?

Machine porn. Check. [Adds machine porn to list of fears, right under "hospitals" and "them what love men in Speedos."]

Re: Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

[identity profile] megmccarron.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't write the book but it belongs to me. Nick bought it for me. someone becomes "a raping machine." but we think "rape" stands in for "fuck" in this scifi world. sadly.

Re: Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'm guaranteed to have nightmares.

Re: Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

[identity profile] megmccarron.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
to clarify, it stands in for "fuck" as its function as a curse word, not, you know, the activity. I hope.

Yeah, teh book was dedicated to his shrink first, then his wife...

Re: Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
So Hollywood! (The dedication, I mean. Not the raping. However it's defined. Yeesh!)

Re: Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

[identity profile] tanaise.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
But he's got boy (machine) parts! So it could be true.

Re: Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

[identity profile] rudi.livejournal.com 2007-02-20 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know.

When faced with seemingly intractable problems I often ask myself "what would a rugged-but-sensitive time-traveling Scotsman or vampire avatar of King Arthur from one of those books Celia reads do?"

And then I don't do that.

It's surprisingly helpful.

Re: Your fingers say no, but your heart says yes.

You win!

I told J you were cranky and now I am turning over the keyboard to him:

---

hello dave

i wochd a kortoon kalld kandy montin

---

(That's all he wanted to tell you. Hope it helps. Jeremiah says, "It's sad when the unicorns take Charlie's kidney! But it's also funny.")

[identity profile] megmccarron.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
let's see what he says when they take his kidney!

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! Tell him thanks :-) I thought he was so tired of candy mountain! I guess he's come around. I'm sure there is no gloating going on there in your house, at all.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_stranger_here/ 2007-02-21 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
When he decided Candy Mountain was funny after all, he actually went and whispered it to Par, because he didn't want me to know he'd switched allegiance. By now, though, the cat's out of the bag.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_stranger_here/ 2007-02-21 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
(Cat is out of bag mainly because Par gloated, yeah)

things to cheer you up

Say the word, I'll be there!

[identity profile] bondgwendabond.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Keith is sheriff. Also, picking a random selection from Eduardo Galeano's Book of Embraces always cheers me up (in an odd way), so something toward the end, in case the need is dire:

FINGERPRINTS

I was born and raised under the stars of the Southern Cross.

Wherever I go, they follow me. Under the sparkling Southern Cross, I live out the stages of my fate.

I have no god. If I had one, I would beseech him not to let me meet death, not yet. I still have a long way to go. There are moons at which I have not yet howled and suns which have not yet set me alight. I have still not swum in all the seas of the world, of which they say there are seven, nor in all the rivers of Paradise, of which they say there are four.

In Montevideo a child explains:
"I never want to die, because I want to play forever."

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he is, but damn. That was harsh. (Particularly having "I smell bread" be Lamb's last words. I'm seeing concussion stuff everywhere lately, it's weird.)

Thanks for the excerpt; I like that a lot.

[identity profile] bondgwendabond.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, good. I never know if that stuff is just depressing to everyone else. The thing I love about that book is how it's about all the bad shit AND all the marvelous things too.

It's sort of like the intended version of the unintended effect of Patsy Cline: No matter how sad I am when I listen to Patsy, I'm not as sad as Patsy. Plus, singing along is fun. (Except for anyone in earshot.)

(Funny and fun aren't the same thing in this particular scenario.)

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I totally getcha. That is one of Xander's most relatable scenes. (Well, OK, he wasn't singing, but you know what I mean.)

[identity profile] bondgwendabond.livejournal.com 2007-02-21 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I had totally forgotten about the Xander scene. I need to go back and rewatch.

if this doesn't cheer you up...

No matter how often I've seen this, it kills me every time.

Well, that was yesterday. So, no bet :-)

I was pretty cranky yesterday, too.

I think I'm in IM withdrawal.
