Wow, I feel kind of bad for her...

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps I should, but I can't.

So I'm not going to disagree with the fact that she did sort of bring this on herself. But it's not her fault that she was the primary headline on CNN for the entire time; just America's skewed sense of what's important.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
True; but she takes full advantage of any and all notoriety she gets. She's famous for being rich, and nothing else. I may be unkind for feeling this way, but the fact that Dave is basically calling her out on that instead of feeding her celebrity is amusing to me.

Heh, fair enough. I can't disagree with that.

She may not be good for much, and someone with a sense of humor would have been better able to handle him, but he's being a dick.

I sometimes like Dave best when he is being a dick.

I know, I get that this is part of his appeal and if I ever watched his show he might grow on me, but I've just never hopped on that train.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I get that not everyone likes it. I think that I am not as kind a person as some of y'all :-)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_stranger_here/ 2007-10-01 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I wouldn't judge this on an axis of kindness, so much as just different types of obnoxiousness work for each of us. I get a kick from plenty of less-than-kind humor if it's coming from some place that hits my buttons right. But Letterman has always shown contempt for certain things I don't want stomped on, and that rubs me the wrong way. (No, Paris Hilton isn't one of them.)

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-10-01 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
I've gotten annoyed at him a few times, mostly back when he made a habit of willful ignorance of his guests. And I have a friend who hates him forever on account of him having been mean to Sly Stone in an interview I've never seen.

Whether or not Letterman is habitually annoying or mean, this struck me as the correct thing to do. Hilton isn't somebody whose fame is incidental to something real they do; this is all she is and all she does, and I think it is correct of Letterman to want no part in her glib.

I'm not a fan of Paris Hilton, but she did once demonstrate an ability to laugh at herself when she did a guest appearance on Saturday Night Live; she appeared as herself on Weekend Update, and did a bit with Jimmy Fallon.

(It occurs to me that the segment might be on YouTube, and whaddya know, it is.)

I remember that sketch. Kudos to her for trying to laugh it off... but I maintain that handling a publicity disaster by getting Tina Fey to write you some funny lines is not the same thing as actually having a good sense of humor about yourself :)

Oh god, that was hilarious. Score another for Dave. :)

I used to really, really like Dave back when he was on NBC, but I haven't liked him a whole lot lately. But stuff like this reminds me of why I used to like him in the first place. Woo.
