I'm So Ashamed of My Eyes, 'Cause They Still Cry For You

So, um. I got my check yesterday. I'm a working novelist.

Man, does that feel good.

In the meantime, there is work to be done. Assuming I get my work done for today, I'll be halfway through the novel-in-progress. At least, I think I'm halfway done, although I'm not really sure what happens in the rest of the book. I hope it doesn't suck.

In celebration, it's poll time! Superpowers has been described as "'The Invisibles' meets The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay." It's shorthand, the Hollywood description; it gives you the flavor of the book, but not much else.

In that spirit, a poll:

[Poll #926473]

I voted purely on love of the LA Confidential soundtrack and the fact I'm reading Queen of Attolia right now.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you read the book? (Confidential, I mean.)

[identity profile] bondgwendabond.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think The Black Dahlia is the only Ellroy I've read, actually. His constant proclamation of being a genius are kind of off-putting, even if true. Should I make an exception?

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
He is off-putting. But the L.A. quartet is quite good, I think, at least the first three. (White Jazz started out in a very jumpy, experimental style that I couldn't get into, and I have yet to pick it up again.)

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I should say, if you didn't like Dahlia then I'm not sure you'll like the rest. There is a lot of violence, f'r instance. But one of the things I like about him is how he keeps me caring about characters who are objectively really unpleasant people.

[identity profile] bondgwendabond.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved Dahlia, actually, and always intended to read more. Then made the mistake of finding out more about his personality and kind of moved him to the "keep buying copies in used bookstores but don't rush to read" category. George Pelecanos just seems so much NICER. And equally genius.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been told by other folks that I need to read Pelecanos, but I haven't yet. Need to get on that.

[identity profile] bondgwendabond.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and violence doesn't usually bother me as long as it's justified and not directed at animals.

[identity profile] tanaise.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What if they're bad animals?

[identity profile] bondgwendabond.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Animals worse than people? Stories don't have those.

[identity profile] coalescent.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Are all of those accurate?

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Some more than others . . . after the first four I got a little silly. (Although elements of those are also present.)

[identity profile] ecmyers.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Sweet! I can't wait to read your novel.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I can't wait for it to be read!

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :-)

[identity profile] stephanieburgis.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Woot! Congratulations. Have you photocopied the check?

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I, um, didn't. My agent asked me if I took a picture of myself with it, and I was like, Oh. I just deposited it.

I have the stub, though . . .

[identity profile] ajjones.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats on the check! Now you have to take yourself out to dinner. So you can say hey, I WROTE this steak. Dammit.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I love that. I wrote a meal!

Congrats

Congrats on the check and your book, David. I think when and if I ever sell my novel, I will do the Peanuts Happy Dance.

Thanks, Darby! I've done a fair amount of dancing alont the way :-)

[identity profile] stephanieburgis.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That definitely counts. :)

Tomorrow night, you're getting the first round!

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. It's a deal!

[identity profile] czakbar.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay for check! (I didn't photocopy mine or take a pic with it either). I just deposited it too. I think this is mostly just an indication that we have perspective on what's important. We'll take pictures with the books when they come out. ;-)

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hells yes! Money is nice, but I have no emotional attachment to a check. A book, on the other hand . . .

[identity profile] ninebelow.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life meets The Crying of Lot 49 was my favourite but in the ned I went fro the marketing punch of alliteration.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It appears to be a popular choice! Now I just have to make it accurate.

[identity profile] kameron-hurley.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmmmm writing checks.

See, now that you're a working novelist it doesn't matter if you get snowed in! Oh the glamor! Oh the intrigue!

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Gads, seriously. Getting around today was a wild adventure! Hope you're warm and dry.

[identity profile] jonhansen.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yay check! Or cheque, as I like to say.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for alternate spellings! :-)

[identity profile] spudofdoom.livejournal.com 2007-02-14 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations mister! What a lovely day.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2007-02-16 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Did you know I just now got notification that you commented on this? Stupid LJ. Thanks, and I miss you guys already.
