So, um. I got my check yesterday. I'm a working novelist.

Man, does that feel good.

In the meantime, there is work to be done. Assuming I get my work done for today, I'll be halfway through the novel-in-progress. At least, I think I'm halfway done, although I'm not really sure what happens in the rest of the book. I hope it doesn't suck.

In celebration, it's poll time! Superpowers has been described as "'The Invisibles' meets The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay." It's shorthand, the Hollywood description; it gives you the flavor of the book, but not much else.

In that spirit, a poll:

[Poll #926473]

I voted purely on love of the LA Confidential soundtrack and the fact I'm reading Queen of Attolia right now.

Have you read the book? (Confidential, I mean.)

I think The Black Dahlia is the only Ellroy I've read, actually. His constant proclamation of being a genius are kind of off-putting, even if true. Should I make an exception?

He is off-putting. But the L.A. quartet is quite good, I think, at least the first three. (White Jazz started out in a very jumpy, experimental style that I couldn't get into, and I have yet to pick it up again.)

I should say, if you didn't like Dahlia then I'm not sure you'll like the rest. There is a lot of violence, f'r instance. But one of the things I like about him is how he keeps me caring about characters who are objectively really unpleasant people.

I loved Dahlia, actually, and always intended to read more. Then made the mistake of finding out more about his personality and kind of moved him to the "keep buying copies in used bookstores but don't rush to read" category. George Pelecanos just seems so much NICER. And equally genius.

I've been told by other folks that I need to read Pelecanos, but I haven't yet. Need to get on that.

Oh, and violence doesn't usually bother me as long as it's justified and not directed at animals.

Animals worse than people? Stories don't have those.

Some more than others . . . after the first four I got a little silly. (Although elements of those are also present.)

I, um, didn't. My agent asked me if I took a picture of myself with it, and I was like, Oh. I just deposited it.

I have the stub, though . . .

Congrats on the check and your book, David. I think when and if I ever sell my novel, I will do the Peanuts Happy Dance.

Yay for check! (I didn't photocopy mine or take a pic with it either). I just deposited it too. I think this is mostly just an indication that we have perspective on what's important. We'll take pictures with the books when they come out. ;-)

Hells yes! Money is nice, but I have no emotional attachment to a check. A book, on the other hand . . .

Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life meets The Crying of Lot 49 was my favourite but in the ned I went fro the marketing punch of alliteration.

Mmmmmm writing checks.

See, now that you're a working novelist it doesn't matter if you get snowed in! Oh the glamor! Oh the intrigue!
