Man Shall Not Say No To Ape

I want to see this movie, like, right now. Sadly I will have to wait until March.

Yesterday I finished The Stolen Lake, and Holy Crap. I have never read Joan Aiken before, and I am retroactively designating myself an idiot for that. I loved this book. So weird, and funny, and dark, and [livejournal.com profile] alicek is awesome for loaning it to me and enlightening me on this matter. DUDES I WANT A SPINNING GEOTHERMAL-POWERED HOUSE. Also a flying ship. (Kind of a given, I know.) I'll pass on the long-tailed cats, though, as I am allergic.

Speaking of animals, the promised Animal Overlord Poll:

[Poll #1145298]

If you properly appreciated LXG, you wouldn't have to wait. I personally am impatiently waiting for Penelope.

Also, Joan Aiken ROCKS. I lent Hannah the complete Dido collection (From The Wolves of Willoby Chase through to Dido and Pa, at least), and she ignored them for 18 months, so NO LOVE FOR HER. It helps greatly to read them in order, particularly for any books past The Stolen Lake. (hmm. My company put out the set I have, so I think I can get more copies for very little. I should look into that.)

I was forced to edit this post to mention that my favorite of the books is still Nightbirds on Nantucket, followed closely by Dido and Pa and Blackhearts at Battersea, followed by the rest of them. The newer ones aren't as good, but still better than most.

I was going to say Nightbirds on Nantucket, too. I am biased, though, since I'm from Nantucket and all.

I think I'm going to go back to the beginning. (I know I'd heard of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase back in the day, but it never clicked.) I'm psyched. And YEAH on looking into the cheap copies!

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Also: IGNORING the LXG comment, since your insanity has been established, I am also intrigued by Penelope, if only to see Reese Witherspoon playing against type.

[identity profile] tanaise.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The insanity is what you love most about me.

[identity profile] rnb.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone who wants to see the crapfest that appears to be Penelope automatically qualifies as insane, so that's both of you.

I've decided, purely out of personal interest, to throw my support behind my parents' dogs.

It looks like it's going to be a close race. I guess this means I should start doing some push-polling!

Would it surprise you to know that Bear-Cub-In-A-Sock supports the eating of both puppies AND babies?

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, like anybody cares about the issues! Look at his li'l nose!!!

[identity profile] jocelina.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
It is a pretty cute li'l nose.

Just imagine it covered in baby or puppy blood. Less cute? I THINK SO.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Less cute, but only until he sticks out his cute li'l tongue and licks the blood off. Then the shrieks become Awwws. MARK MY WORDS.

[identity profile] tacithydra.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooo, Magical Trevor! Dammit, I should have nominated that cow for animal overlord.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno . . . its only qualification is an aisle of beans.

[identity profile] tacithydra.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That little bear is in a sock! How can it be our animal overlord without use of its limbs!?

An aisle of beans is about what Burt's qualifications are, anyway, and he seems pretty confident.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
So Andrew Burt is as qualified as a cow? That's a campaign slogan for you.

That little bear only needs to look at someone, ask them in its little-bear voice to do something, and it will be done. THAT IS THE POWER OF CUTE.

[identity profile] tacithydra.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
God help us all if it asks someone to release its limbs.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Shh. Don't give it any ideas!!!

[identity profile] bondgwendabond.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay for the discovery of Joan Aiken! You have much fun reading ahead.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I am pleased! I was going to yell at everyone for not telling me about her earlier, but then I was thinking about how we all have these things we know about that we love, and maybe we mention them to people who don't know about them because we think they will love them too, but it's so hard because everyone has too much to read/watch/listen to, and sometimes naked enthusiasm just doesn't translate well. And sometimes you don't even know to say anything, because you might assume that other person already knows about John Carpenter or The New Pornographers. And I know I've heard and seen Aiken's name, so probably people have told me to read her before, and I just wasn't receptive for whatever reason.

Anyway, that's what I was thinking. Not that you asked :-)

Possibly we felt any author so fabulous that her titles are used as footers for an issue of LCRW (I want to say 14, but that's not necessarily based in reality) doesn't need more vocal support.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I doubt I was aware that those were her titles at the time. I guess my point is that I, at least, run into so many references, recommendations, and allusions every day that it's hard to know which ones to pay attention to.

[identity profile] wheatland-press.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Cats are already the animal overlords...that's what I was trying to say. I'm hoping things go better for me if I vote for them from the git-go.

"From the git-go." Oh man.

Working hard?

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I, for one, run my nose at our feline overlords.

[identity profile] sarah-prineas.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You forgot dragons. AGAIN.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahem. THE FLOOR WAS OPEN FOR NOMINATIONS. You have no one to blame but yourself.

[identity profile] sarah-prineas.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Curses!

I nominate dragons retroactively.

[identity profile] le-trombone.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Interestingly, I checked out The Wolves Of Willoughby Chase a few days ago from the library. This after years of Aiken's praises being sung by a friend of mine. I guess I'm a slow starter.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-27 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too :-)

What! Only one vote for the octopus! This is an outrage.

[identity profile] snurri.livejournal.com 2008-02-28 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's puzzling. You'd think the votes would be in multiples of eight.

Ah! But wouldn't each octopus have to have 8 lj accounts in order for that to occur?
