Since the story took place in the 50's Lucas deliberately made it sf to make it like the adventure B-movies of the 50's.
The nuclear test was simply there to follow the Indy formula. You need 2 action sequences before you get to the main plot.
All I was looking for was something better than Temple of Doom. It was, but unfortunately it was much closer to Temple than to Crusade.
