I'm partial to the Dune cover myself, mostly because I've never actually managed to finish book 2 and now I have a gooda reasonable an excuse to give up trying. :-)
On that note, the defenses coming from some of MGK's commenters scare me.
Though not as much as the thought of what Kevin Anderson's Paul of Dune must be like as that exponential drop has carried on into the sequels and prequels and... what do you call this latest one, an inquel?
LOL! "The Land of Bad Names!" That could describe so many fantasy novels.
Ironically, I joined a displeased-former-fans-of-Goodkind type forum this week....He's an Objectivist, not a Libertarian. Which is far, far worse. Some have suggested his work be called Ayn Rand in Fantasyland.... His work also features a chicken as the embodyment of all evil. Good. Night.
Yes! He's gone bat-shit crazy! He insists he writes "deep and meaningful treatises on humanity" (that's almost word for word a direct quote) and has banned talking about other authors on his fan site (along with any criticism of his own, er, work)because he doesn't write fantasy. I hear his hero starts beating up peace protesters in the last book! And don't even try to read interviews with--the pontificating...it's like his version of a magic power!
Yes. He was quite big on that--but he was just ripping off Robert Jordan's version of sadomasochism. I gave up on him when he started ranting about Communism for 700 pages (book five I think) and accusing our government of being out-of-control socialists. (?????) If only! (I mean, the government sucks, but...too socialist?? Only for the rich buggers on Wall Street....)
I like the Feist one. When I read his first book, someone asked me how I liked it. "Well," I said grimly, for I knew this boy was a fan of the series. "I felt like it was someone writing about his D&D character." "That's exactly what it is!" he said, full of enthusiasm. So. We're not friends anymore.
