I read a book by a well-regarded science fiction writer whom I had never read before, and it was a mess--tonally all over the place, multiple story threads that don't all work and don't intersect until halfway into the book. It was also preachy in the extreme. I Googled for some reviews and this book seems to have been well-received. I am once again flummoxed by the tastes of the genre-reading public.

Am not really writing at the moment on account of really really needing a job. Well, I really really need money (or at least the credit card people and the student loan people do), but rather than whine about it here I've just been trying to get something fast. This is complicated by the fact that I appear to have no marketable skills. I knew I forgot to do something with my education.

At my uncle's funeral one of my mom's cousins said she couldn't think of a single male cousin who hadn't died of some kind of heart trouble. Then she started rattling off names. I figure I've got 15-20 years to live, or at least until some sort of Letterman-type bypass surgery. I should start saving for that now.

I Netflixed Vanilla Sky because I wanted to see how bad it was compared to Abre los ojos, but I realized I really didn't want to watch it and I sent it back. Tom Cruise? No. Cameron Diaz? Not usually, no. Penelope Cruz, yes, but I like her better in Spanish.

Good Things Involving Tickets And Also Trips To Minneapolis: My brother bought some tickets to see Jim Gaffigan on Saturday, and he was hilarious. Laughing for an hour straight is pretty good therapy. Tomorrow night I shall make use of a ticket to see the New Pornographers at First Avenue which I bought back in a time when I had discretionary fundage. I expect to be rocked back on my heels by the awesome, and also to pine over Neko Case and her scarlet locks.
