70. Hound by Vincent McCaffrey. I think I'm correct in saying that this is the first mystery novel published by Small Beer Press--not that it slots entirely into that genre, but it's more that than anything else. It's the story of Henry Sullivan, a bookseller in Boston, and that story concerns the character of Boston as much as it does that of Henry. In many ways it's the examination of a character's milieu, much like the Easy Rawlins books are a portrait of L.A. in the fifties and sixties. McCaffrey's transitions keep one on one's toes, and I suspect that some may find Henry a difficult character to like--he's a bit curmudgeonly, but that's sort of the point. The book centers on his difficulty in making connections, the ghosts of his failed relationships, and the prickliness of potential new ones. I hope there will be more of these.
