From Rob Liefeld, horrible artist and worse writer:

First and foremost, as I looked over the collection, the thing that hits me is that this was the work of a hyper-active 22 year old. Twenty-two years old!. Crap, I was a prolific little s**t. I mean between X-Force, Cable, Deadpool, Youngblood . . . what was I drinking, y'know? The stylistic stuff, the skinny ankles, the cross-hatching, none of that gets in the way, it's all part of the evolution.

Back then, I was thinking I need to make the most kick-ass high octane in your face comic books. Period. That's what transformed New Mutants from a sissy book that sold 100,000 copies to the last three issues which all approached and then achieved one million sales. New Mutants sold 1 million copies, four printings, no damn gimmicks, opening the way for X-Force and later Youngblood. So I was locked into a style of comics that has served and continues to serve me well years later.

Bonus for the New Mutants fans reading this LJ, and I know there are a few; in the comments over at Newsarama Rob the Enlightened One clarifies that he was only calling it "a sissy book" because it had girls in it. THANKS FOR CLEARING THAT UP ROB FOR A MINUTE THERE I THOUGHT YOU WERE BEING INSULTING.

Up until that point, from Hawk & Dove to New Mutants and then X-Force, I was known as everything from a "young prodigy" to a "genius" with all the success I had carved out.

Wow. He's a bigger idiot than I expected, and boy is that saying something. I was going to pull a quote from the interview to mock but there was too much material, I just had to back away.

Man, I had forgotten about that ad.

"So Rob, have you had any formal art training?"

"No."

SHOCKED I TELL YOU SHOCKED.

I do not like this person.

I like you, though, even though you have completely failed to answer my email.

Thank you, and I 'm sorry!

Email? Can you tell me when you sent it? I have about 400 to go through at any given time, and it's easy to miss a few!

Ooops! This was aimed at snurri, not you. I clicked the wrong clicky. Although I'm sure I'd like you if I knew you and pout publicly if you ignored my emails.

But thanks! :-)

Wait. He wasn't being sarcastic? He really does think this well of himself? Never heard of him. Whoever he is, he ain't no Kirby or Steranko.

I always liked the fact in his depiction of the world, people were universally ashamed of their feet.

I can't stand the guy, personally or artistically. But I gotta hand it to him... he made millions and millions of dollars. That's certainly more than I'll make in the comics industry.

He singled-handedly drove me away from the x-books. Well, perhaps not only by himself, but he was a big part of it.

Ugh. Rob Liefeld is one of only two current comics artists/writers who, if their name is on a title, will make me not buy it. Even if it's a title on my pull list.

(The other is Bill Goddamn Willingham. I don't have enough bile to properly badmouth him. Feh.)

IOcomics-relatedN, Blue Beetle has been cancelled. Breaks my hard little geek heart.

Oh man, I thought I was the only person in the world who hated Fables.

I am also very sad about Blue Beetle. Also Birds of Prey, although I dropped it after Simone left.

My Willingham-hate actually comes from his unconscionable retcon of Spoiler's death in Batman. (Basically, Leslie Tompkins didn't exactly *kill* Spoiler, but let her die in order to teach Batman a lesson. That's right, Dr. Tompkins, the ultimate pacifist, the do-no-harm physician, let a teenage girl die in order to teach Batman a lesson.)

WTF, man???

Also, his writing on the Robin title was execrable.

What a complete dick.

You know, I got caught up in the Liefeld mania myself, but once Youngblood came out, I'd had it. The guy can't draw, can't write, and is an unbelievable misogynist.

And thanks for the link to his 40 worst drawings. The tiny feet! The gigantic guns! Muscles! Breasts! Pouches!

And YES! I think I added you on the basis of your New Mutants art. I love the piece with Dani and Brightwind :-)
