Cookies On the Porch

I've mentioned Cookie Day to a few folks over the years, and they mostly give me incredulous looks. Here's some proof. We made over 4000 cookies this year, but didn't break the record. Three families; seventeen adults at least made an appearance (some did no work, AHEM), and five kids tried their hands at glopping frosting and colored sugar onto cutouts. The moms do most of the work ahead of time, making up dough; the rest of us help with the ball-rolling, baking, counting, etc.

We've been doing this for thirty-one years.

Why on earth would people not believe in this? It seems utterly sensible to me.

... some did no work ...

I'll have you know that managerial skills are highly valued, and sometimes the best thing to do is just get out of the way of the people with special skills.

But geez... I feel accomplished just to make thirty cookies at a time.

I Love it. My aunt always went crazy making many different kinds of cookies for teachers and friends of her kids. I have been known on some years to do several cakes and 3-4 types of cookies. My son is only willing to minimally help, so I only did a bit last year and this year we're doing 2 kinds, probably 10-12 dozen total. If I get extra ambitious, a third kinda may slip in.

The kitchen I grew up in would have been great for this kind of big group baking fest. Sadly my NYC kitchen, nsm.

That's totally awesome, although I'm a bit boggled: you must have two ovens, yeah?

My friend [livejournal.com profile] comice's family does a Pie Day every year and they make a couple dozen apple pies all at once. Quite the achievement!
