55. The Riddle-Master of Hed by Patricia McKillip. No one told me this was part of a trilogy! Given that, it's perhaps forgivable that it doesn't really have an ending, exactly. Very charming and engagingly written, though the protestations of the protagonist regarding his destiny did get a bit tiresome after a while. I'm not sure I can speak about this intelligently until I get hold of the other two books (on request from the library) and can talk about the whole.

Have you read The Forgotten Beasts of Eld? That's easily her best book.

When it was published people treated it as a kind of companion volume to The Last Unicorn. Nowadays it's harder to see the connection, but there was a lot less original fantasy being published in the seventies.

This is the first of her books I've read; I have a couple of others around (sadly, not the rest of this series), but I'm not sure if Eld is one of them.

I did mention on your FBook that it was a series.... The second book is from Raederle's POV, which I thought was great.

And I second the recommendation of The Forgotten Beasts of Eld. Marvelous allegory about facing one's demons.
