This is why I hate New Year's: because it kind of feels like someone is standing at my elbow waiting to collect the last twelve months, glancing at their watch and tapping their foot, and I'm sitting here thinking "Hey! I'm still working on this, you fucker!" This is my life we're talking about, and I don't believe in stages or other arbitrary divisions--those are the constructs of fiction. I don't believe in clean slates and I don't believe we can just put things behind us. 2009 sucked in many respects, but that doesn't all go away at the stroke of midnight; it's just a tick on an arbitrarily set clock. Taking stock is all very well, I suppose, but I don't need a calendar to tell me that I'm not where I want to be.

So anyway; happy new calendar day, you jokers.

Yes. On the one hand, I keep thinking, "Get me out of this year so we can stop hemorrhaging relatives!" On the other hand, I know that the turn of the year will not magically make my elderly relatives young again (or fix the vertigo or any of a number of other things). Wheee.

Inspired by you, I stayed in my room reading and sleeping and avoided the party my roommate was having upstairs, which I was supposed to attend. If he's mad, I'm referring him to you.

I have the opposite reaction: New Year's is my absolute favorite holiday. No matter what I did or didn't accomplish the previous year, I like the feeling of starting fresh, even while I recognize that it's purely arbitrary.

But I know where you're coming from. ;-)
