Dear Netflix Subscribers Who Had My DVDs Last:
Quit scratching them! Jerks.
In other news, they found one of Captain Kidd's shipwrecks. One of the things that makes my inner seven-year-old very sad is that no one will ever write an article about finding one of the sunken vessels of the legendary Captain Schwartz. Not without a major lifestyle change, anyway.
The Yankees are on steroids. I wasn't expecting Clemens' name to come up, but then again I'm not that surprised. I thought he was a jackass before, so this doesn't change anything. What I'm wondering is if any of the players I love are going to be named. I was reading about the IOC reclaiming Marion Jones' medals this morning, and it made me sad. She was a lot of fun to watch in those games. I don't know why I want sports--at least, my sport--to be pure in a way that the world is not, but I guess I do. Then again I guess maybe I want that just because the world is not pure. As always, I reserve the right to be inconsistent.
Watched Devil's Playground last night, a documentary about the Amish coming-of-age period known as Rumspringa. In some Amish communities, the kids are allowed to live as non-Amish for a period starting at the age of sixteen and lasting until they decide to (if they decide to) join the church. Cars, booze, and satellite TV are all fair game. One of the kids depicted in the film was using (and dealing) crystal meth. What was most interesting to me was not the extremes of behavior, but the perspectives that everyone brought to it--the kids were remarkably well-spoken and thoughtful about the decision they faced, and the elders were more realistic about the challenges that the kids and the community faced than I suppose I expected. I think I was unfairly expecting them to be more close-minded and reactionary than they were. It raises questions, too, like are they an alien culture among us, or are we the aliens? Considering how easily the kids in the film assimilate, it's tempting to say the former, but in many ways that's the less desirable option. Really thought-provoking stuff.
Twelve days until Xmas (it is Thursday, right?), and I haven't started shopping yet. Should get on that, soon . . .

Date: 2007-12-13 09:12 pm (UTC)I like some of Captain Kidd's book jackets. (Oh wait...)
What are sports?
I have not had a scratched Netflix DVD yet and I have just jinxed myself. Which, I think, means that I owe everyone Cokes or crystal meth.

I've had a lot of scratched discs, especially lately. Enough that I worry that the reporting people will think I am scratching them myself just so I can report them.
