Like I'm Not In Debt Enough Already

On a few occasions recently I've found the idea of going back to school for another degree wandering through my head, upon which I have pounded said head against the nearest brick surface.

But man recently the idea of studying history for a couple of years has seemed really appealing.

WTF IS WRONG WITH ME.

We're too bookish. There's no cure. I think about it too, even another undergrad degree since it'd be a breeze and I could write while getting loans.

Instead, I'm hustlin' up freelancin' and I do crash courses on all sorts of subjects.

Part of my reason is I think it might make me more marketable for the kind of jobs I'm thinking about right now. But of course by the time I'm done with the degree I'll probably be thinking about a different kind of job.

Nothing's wrong with you. I have a degree and I'm thinking of going back to school :) It's very appealing.

I guess, aside from the debt, what flummoxes me is that it took me eight and a half years to slog through my undergrad, and I thought I'd never want to deal with school again. And now I've already got one Master's, and I'm thinking longingly of another.

Nothing wrong with that at all. You can never have too many master's degrees, that's what I say.

Myself, I think I'm gonna sign up for a spinning class at the Y (that's the kind of spinning with stationary bikes) and a sewing class at the county extension office (that's the kind of sewing where you make clothes).

Nothing wrong with cherry picking a class or two, maybe even auditing if that's an option and the cost is a factor.

I'd go further and say why not just study yourself?

Exactly what I was going to say. The good thing about college is (hopefully) it taught you how to go out and study things on your own.

I am, of course, reading history all the time. But, ya know, people don't usually hire based on "What books have you read?"

It doesn't have to be, of course, but part of the reason I'm thinking this is that it could be a good complement to my Library Science master's, and get me the jobs I've been thinking about. Although as I said above, I may change my mind about what jobs I want by the time I finish.

HISTORY! Not computer science, or pulmnology, or something that'll get you a job! But history! You'll have to go all the way through to the PhD and then try to get an academic-track job!

Oh, I can get pretty specific. I'd like to study St. Paul history, and Minnesota at large. At least, that's what I'm obsessed with this month.

My dad got his MA in humanities and his PhD in History. He has been like walking SAT prep since I was 4 because of it.

History becomes this lifestyle, it's the darndest thing. You should do it. Knowledge is power.

I love history and wish I had a more formal education in it too. Instead, I didn't discover how fascinating and wonderful it is, as well as informing about Now, until my late twenties, and have been trying to catch up on my own ever since.

Go for it! And I agree with Lon. No need to do into debt to take a class here and there. Continuing Education is usually at a lower tuition rate.

Also, check your local historical society for tips on free and cheap history classes and reading groups in your area. If you don't need Credits, you can sometimes find cool stuff like that to scratch your history itch.
