Helicopters hovering all. Night. Long.

Uncle's funeral not going to be held at family church downtown because all the streets are closed.

On the west side of Saint Paul, the police are raiding protestor's headquarters.

Sign in Sweeney's says, "ENJOY YOURSELVES WHILE YOU CAN. THEY WILL SOON BE HERE."

Elephant wariness.

This can't be over soon enough.

I remember one year when my city hosted a national Honda GoldWing owner's convention. It was anarchy; I can't imagine how terrifying it would be to be overrun by politicians, whether or not they were on motorcycles. My prayers are with you and yours. ;)

I confess I think a motorcycle convention might be worse, for the noise alone. But then, most of them aren't here yet.

When the GOP convention was held in NYC in 2004, it was fucking hell. Soldiers in fatigues with machine guns everywhere, giant concrete road blocks, police cars and motorcades clogging up (or stopping altogether) traffic for hours, everyone being treated as a suspect/potential terrorist - I don't think it's a coincidence that I moved out of Manhattan not long after that.

Yeah, I'm planning to walk through downtown on Monday to get to a concert and I'm wondering if it's going to be like the Berlin Wall, or what. SHOULD BE FUN.

OTOH, the big story out of New York that year was protestors standing outside the Broadway theatres while the delegates went to be entertained, shouting things like, "The Phantom DIES AT THE END!!"

I mean, if you are going to protest, that's a memorable and cromulently legal way to do it!

You can't have his funeral at the FAMILY CHURCH?!?!?!?

This is INSANE.

You should see over here -- they've reinforced the prison. What on earth do they think the protesters are going to DO?

Are you going to the demonstration? I wasn't going to because I think it's pointless, but then I thought: fuckif I'm going to be intimidated, and then I did feel a little intimidated.

I'm going to this "Take Back Labor Day" concert on Monday; I think one of the marches is at the same time. I don't know what I'm going to do. I just want them to go away.

Also, if you are also walking, would you like to walk together? I am going to take the 16 over to St. Paul and then walk to the island and I would love to have some company.

Boston got pretty much shut down for the Dem convention in 2004 -- which proved to be way overkill, if you DID go into work, there were empty subway cars and easy parking. I hear the Rep con in NYC was a nightmare, though.

I heard that about Boston, that everyone stayed away from downtown and hence there was no trouble getting around. We'll see what happens here, I guess, but a lot of people who work downtown are planning to telecommute.

Unbelievable.

I mean, I do believe it. It just makes me angry.

I'm sorry that you and your family have to deal with this on top of grieving.
