Perhaps it allows them to feel superior.

Their ignorance trumps your hard data anytime.
I mean, 16% of Americans are unsure if Barack Obama is a Muslim (good job, McPain campaign), despite the GOP and rightist press spending months this spring and summer ripping into him for not disavowing the Christian pastor of his church, Jeremiah Wright. That was the Trinity United Church of Christ. In the news for MONTHS. Yet by August, almost two out of ten natural born goobers could not apply the simplest litmus test to the rumor that Obama's a Muslim.
There is ignorance, and then there is willful ignorance: believing stupid things because you want to.

If America plunges off the cliff one more time, it will be due to the latter, and to the Rovean GOP's ability to use that to bring out what is worst, ugliest, and basest in human nature, like a poison.
