78. Little Crow (Taoyateduta): Leader of the Dakota by Gwenyth Swain. A brief biography for juvie readers, but I often find that books aimed at school kids are a good starting point for research topics. Taoyateduta doesn't really translate as "Little Crow"; a closer approximation is actually "His Red Nation." Taoyateduta was a leader in the Dakota War of 1862, but a reluctant one. There's an extraordinary speech included here, supposedly memorized and later reported by his son Wowinape, in which he tells the young warriors who come to seek his leadership (after they had already set things in motion by killing five settlers) that their cause is hopeless; he enumerates the reasons for this, but concludes that he is not a coward, and he will die with them. Sadly Taoyateduta probably won't make it into my novel, as the timing and logistics don't quite work, but I'm glad to have more insight into him regardless.
