1. Young Adult Novel by Daniel Pinkwater
2. Avilion by Robert Holdstock.
3. Passing by Nella Larsen.
4. A Little Yellow Dog by Walter Mosley. It's 1963, and Easy Rawlins has tried to leave his bad old days behind him; he's got an honest job, and he's doing a decent job of staying away from the street. Even his crazy friend Mouse is laying low and behaving. Part of what makes these books great is that, for Easy, mysteries aren't a nice diversion or a cozy pastime; when he gets involved in these things, people he cares about get hurt, and Easy has a family counting on him. Even though the people Easy tries to help are usually the next ones to get killed, even though the messes they're in are their own fault, even though trouble is contagious and Easy finds himself suspected of the crimes he's trying to solve, there's a core of goodness in Easy that makes me care about what happens to him.
