I am one of six people who enjoyed that movie. But I completely understand why some people loathe it.

The only one on that list I haven't seen in Repo Man. Is it really worth tracking down? Didn't sound that much of a geek movie to me.

I'd forgotten about Dark City.

Even though I've only seen it in pieces out of sequence on TV, 5th Element really is a lot of fun. (And I think you're probably more likely to enjoy it if you're looking for "fun" rather than anything particularly substantial.)

Of the list, I haven't seen 4:
• Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan
• Serenity
• Dark City
• Repo Man

And of the 4, I totally intend to see Serenity, I was just rewatching the series before I watched it, and then I got side tracked by something else (oh, Christmas. That's what distracted me.).

I rather liked "Dark City," but it falls a bit short of Classic status IMO.

I have seen bits of "The Fifth Element" on TBS and such. Just never the entire thing.

I'd trade out Darkman for Buckaroo Banzai. Other than that, I've seen and loved all of those, except The Matrix, which I saw and liked okay.

Yeah, BB trumps Darkman, although it's hard for me to dis anything Raimi.

The Matrix was like geek porn, and I kind of hated it. It looked pretty, but it was all "I'm actually very important! I can download badassery into my brain! A pretty girl's love will save me!" Bah.

The stuff inbetween the lines is what I liked best about Matrix, and the sequels subsequently ruined it. It could be my days of playing Shadowrun, but I love the idea of a ragtag group of more-powerful-than normal rebels fighting against and blank and corporate entity that is nearly omniscient.

It was like they took a hacker asthetic, of the misfits fighting the system, and gave it a hollywood polish. Neo should have been a 240 pound pasty guy with an acne problem and hard drives full of porn.

(Remember the scene in the beginning, when someone comes by and buys something from Neo on a disk? What could that have been but really kinky porn!)

I'd say pretty much all those films are worth a look. Which, you know, speaks well to the question of "The Fifth Element," so one of these days when I'm feeling like ending my life maybe I'll watch it :-)

It would have made the scenes involving Kung Fu much more wild. It's easy to believe that someone with Keanu's build can by spry. Someone with my build? Not so much.

My take on the list:

• Brazil -- This Gilliam's best.
• The Matrix -- Definitely a good pick.
• The Fifth Element -- Horrible Dreck. Willis is awful.
• Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan -- The best Star Trek movie of the lot. Not necessarily a must see movie compared to other movies, however.
• Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home -- Second best Star Trek movie, but if you're not a fan of the series don't bother.
• Serenity -- I don't know anything about this at all.
• Dark City -- Visually compelling, smart, unique film that misses being good enough to be actually memorable.
• 12 Monkeys -- Not nearly as difficult a movie as people seem to think. It is actually very straight forward. It's not even as hard as Back to the Future 2 plot point wise. Truly good. Memorable. Best Gilliam after Brazil.
• Shaun of the Dead -- A fun zombie parody that made me curious enough to watch the original 1979 Dawn of the Dead which is a friggin masterpiece!
• Darkman -- Haven't seen it.
• Army of Darkness -- Saw it. Laughed. But really, who cares?
• War Games -- More of a nostalgia movie for middle aged Gen Xers than anything.
• Monty Python and the Holy Grail -- I own this movie on DVD.
• Office Space -- I own this too.
• Repo Man -- I should own this one.

I'm with you on Brazil. I love Gilliam's stuff but that's the apex. Have you seen La Jetee, the film that 12 Monkeys was based on? I think it does just as much or more, and far more succintly. I think it's like 12 minutes long?
