OMG The Host. Every one of you bastards needs to see this movie. (I call you bastards out of love.) Yeah, I saw 300, and although it had its moments, it was better as a comic. For every great image there was a line of horrid dialogue or narration. I'm not saying you shouldn't see it, necessarily. But, it will be there next weekend, and The Host may not be. I'm not kidding. GO!!!

What makes 'The Host' rise above other movies in the monster-movie genre? I must admit the trailers look pretty cool, though :)

Re 300: Is it just me, or did they overuse CGI in that movie? The trailer made it look like all the backgrounds were washed out, and it reminded me of those 90s PC games with the actors superimposed over CGI backgrounds.

Andrew, it was funny, scary, moving, fun, satirical, and wonderfully cathartic. I saw another blog post that called it "pure movie" and I agree with that.

If I recall correctly, all of the background shots in 300 were CGI, much like Sin City. It didn't bother me a lot except in the council hall scene, which looked terrible. My main beef with the movie was that some of the great images from Miller's graphic novel were gone in a second, while they lingered over some horrible lines. That and I'd seen a show about the real Battle of Thermopylae the night before, and I was a little distracted by all the inaccuracies :-)

Man, I have been waiting half of forever for The Host to come out - finally seeing it tomorrow. I'm glad that you thought it was awesome!

I hope The Host does that Korean movie thing where there are all these abrupt tonal shifts and people are weeping about their dead lover one minute and laughing about someone farting the next. Seriously, Korean films LOVE that.

You will not be disappointed by the tonal shifts thing. I dare to say you will not be disappointed in any way. So great!

The Host = happiness all over. Best monster movie ever. I LOVED it.

Did you see the NYT review? I was very cranky with the way he kept saying how ugly the monster is. The monster was beautiful! But the Little Miss Sunshine comparison was on the money.

You should check out this review by Rob Hood.

I don't know if I'd say the monster was beautiful, but it was cool, and terrifying. And Yes to the "Little Miss Sunshine" comparison!

RE: the Hood review. I so hope he's wrong about the Hollywood remake. That way lies nothing but badness.

I found 300 to be inadequate. No prisoners! (action) No mercy! (action) *le sigh*

Yeah, I was kinda bored in parts. And there were people sniggering all around me. I haven't heard so much sniggering since high school health class. Were there people sniggering at your showing?

Not that I remember. There was a group of boys who...reacted...to the "erect nipples like thumbs" portion of the movie, but not so much sniggering.

Yeah, that was what triggered the sniggering. One of the things, anyway.

I sniggered. [livejournal.com profile] infinitehotel and I were both cracked up at at least one point.

I am not ashamed. It was a ridiculous movie.

Yeah, but I'm guessing you weren't sniggering at nipples, as if they were something you'd never seen before.

dude went to see 300 without me on wednesday (*grrrrrrrrrr*). So not happy. He hated it.

We will be going to see Grindhouse (WOO) and Blades Of Glory though.

I had not heard of this and will add this to the list. Where is it playing?

ALSO, you know where I can get me a copy of that one movie... um... CRAP. the island one. with the kids. and the guns. where they have to kill each other.

I HATE MY BRAIN.

Dude hasn't seen it.

anyway. I'll STFU now.

The Host was at River East 21 and Landmark Century Centre a few weeks ago . . . not sure where it's at now. Metromix would know.

>will be going to see...Blades Of Glory though.

Good gravy, why?

Er. I don't mean that as snarky as maybe it sounds. I see all these smart people all excited about that movie and I can't figure out why. Honestly curious.

(On the other hand, I want to see The Reaping. So I have no moral high ground from which to snark.)

I'll be seeing it, though maybe not this weekend. If liking Will Ferrell is wrong (not to mention Amy Poehler and Will Arnett) then I don't wanna be right.

I'm neutral on Ferrell in general, but in a movie that looks like one long (unfunny) gay joke?

Mostly because it looks dumb as crap and abso-freaking-lutly HILARIOUS.

I have no idea why I find it so funny. I did not see Anchorman or Talledega nights. Will Ferrell usually leaves me cold, and I do not belong to the cult of Napolean Dynamite.

But for some reason Blades of Glory strikes me as HILARIOUS.

Yes, yes, v. late on this, but I wanted to wait until I saw it to comment.

I loved this movie. I *lurved* this movie. And we deserved every shot it took at us. That was one of the best parts, I think.

My sweetie was glad to see some respect given to catfish. Cuz that thing had to be a mutant catfish. Look at the shape of the body.

My hubby's thing for catfish? Uh--best not to get into that here.....
