A list of players named in the Mitchell report.

The only Twins I see are Knoblauch and Rondell White, which is a relief. One can't help noticing that both had significant dropoffs in performance after early promise.

I downloaded the report at one minute after it became available. The biggest stunner for me was Paulie Lo Duca, aka "Heart and Soul," and helps explain why the Dodgers were so willing to unload him back in 2004.

Yeah, I wonder now if part of the conflict between Knobby and T.K. didn't have to do with all this mess. It probably went beyond that--by all accounts Knobby was just an asshole--but I guess I'd like to think that the Twins as an organization have been discouraging that.

So have you read the whole thing? Will you be blogging a report?

I've skimmed some of it, and will try to get through the rest tonight so I can write something up. The pdf is 409 pages, though. The most interesting bits of evidence are the photos of checks from players to Kirk Radomski to pay for the stuff.

ESPN has an interesting poll going right now about the whole thing. I seem to be more typical than I expected, except for the part where none of my favorite players have been named.

I like that this entry is still tagged with the "you are about to view adult content which may not be suitable for minors" disclaimer.

You're the second person to mention that on a recent post. Is this because I checked the "deals with adult concepts" thing, or because you haven't turned off the filter that LJ set us all to by default when they made this stupid change?

Good question. I thought I unchecked the default, but I'll go look...

You should check you journal while logged out, too.

Well, I know I checked that option, because I figured I didn't want to get flagged by someone dumb. Maybe that was the wrong thing to do.

Did he flag me before or after he busted a cap in his own ass?

Okay, now that I told it I'm almost as old as Chance, it should be okay.

I think this is one of the problems with the report, that is, assuming that if someone's name isn't in it, they haven't been using anything. I feel kind of the same way, though, looking for names of people I like on my favorite teams. They're going to be releasing more names soon, though, from everything I've read. Bleh.

That's a good point. Thanks for deflating my optimistic mood :-)

This is really going to suck.

You can ask Chance how much fun it was having me around at Clarion.

This whole thing makes me sad. It makes me sad that people were peddling the stuff, it makes me sad that players chose to take it knowing that it was illegal and unsafe. I mean...didn't anyone else watch Lyle Alzedo die? Jesus. How could you have seen him post-chemo, weighing about 125 lbs and still thought it was worth doing that to yourself?

It's been a sad year off the field in a lot of areas, hasn't it?

It makes me sad, too.

I think part of the trouble is that the steroids now are different from the ones that killed Alzedo; they aren't safe, necessarily, but they're different enough for the players to be convinced or convince themselves that they're worth the risk. It doesn't make it less stupid or less disappointing, though.

It's been a pretty sordid year in sports. I wonder, though, if that isn't largely because it's all under more scrutiny now than in the past. Whether that's a good or a bad thing . . .

Yeah, the level of scrutiny is definitely a factor...which makes me wonder why these guys still think they can get away with anything.

And like you, I feel funny about being glad I didn't see certain players -- like Vizquel and Alomar -- on that list. Part of the whole silliness of sports' fans (and I know I'm silly) is forming these imaginary connections to these guys, you know? Omar's son is the same age as mine and his name is also Nicholas and if Omar had turned out to be using while he was an Indian...well...

That was a tangent, but...sad, yes.

This makes sense of a conversation I overheard at dinner last night. Someone kept repeating, loudly, "Rondell White! I'm telling you, it was Rondell White, and that's it. I mean, Chuck Knoblauch, but he's old. So it was just White."

I should have known, but I thought, huh? the hell? who is that emphatic about Rondell White for any reason?
